Peter S. Stamatis

HBA President

Peter is an active trial attorney with nearly two decades of extensive experience handling civil and criminal trial and appellate work in the State and Federal courts of Illinois. Peter has represented a wide range of clients on both the plaintiff and defense sides of litigation. He defends professionals before regulatory boards and participates in arbitrations and mediations.

As President, Peter serves as the principal executive officer and supervises the business and affairs of the Association. Peter also presides over all Business Meetings and performs all duties incident to the office of the President and such other duties as may be assigned by the Board of Directors. Peter also serves as liaison to the Nominating and Annual Banquet Committees.

Tom primarily serves as counsel to closely held international and domestic businesses in the manufacturing, distribution, service, consulting, oil and gas, wholesale, construction and retail industries from their inception, as their needs grow and change, through their final disposition. He counsels these entities on a broad range of issues including mergers and acquisitions, sales, complex tax planning, international operations, banking, insurance, contractual, employee and asset protection strategies. Eleni Kouimelis                                         

Partner, Winston & Strawn LLP

HBA First Vice President

Eleni is chair of Winston & Strawn's Chicago environmental law department. Eleni focuses her practice on environmental issues that arise in a variety of contexts, including transactions, compliance counseling, and litigation. Eleni assists clients with environmental permitting, particularly air permitting, and provides environmental counseling in corporate and real estate transactions, including acquisitions, divestitures, financings, and securities offerings. She provides compliance counseling to diverse industrial and manufacturing clients in all the environmental media, including designing and implementing internal audit programs, strategic planning, and permitting and siting approval. Thomas G. Massouras                              

Trial Attorney, U.S. Dept. of Housing & Urban Development 

HBA Second Vice President


Tom is a trial attorney for the Chicago Regional Office of the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development ("HUD"), litigating and overseeing legislation for the agency in the six-state Midwest Region. Prior to this position, he was a senior staff attorney with the Chicago Housing Authority, an attorney with the Trial Division of the Illinois Attorney General's office, and an Assistant Public Defender for DuPage County.

In the absence of the President, the President-Elect, and the First Vice-President, Tom performs the duties of the President and other duties as assigned by the President or the Board of Directors. Tom also serves as liaison to the Association Events Committee.

Hon. Anna H. Demacopoulos                

Illinois Circuit Court Judge, Circuit Court of Cook County

HBA Treasurer

Judge Demacopoulos is a Circuit Court Judge with the Circuit Court of Cook County.

As Treasurer, Anna is responsible for the collection, maintenance and investment of all dues and other monies of the HBA. Anna also serves as liaison to the Membership and Fundraising Committees.


 

Hariklia "Carrie" Karis                       

Partner, Kirkland & Ellis, LLP

HBA Secretary

 

Carrie is a litigation partner in the Chicago office of Kirkland & Ellis. She concentrates her practice in the areas of commercial litigation, insurance and products liability. Hariklia's successful defense of General Motors Corporation was chosen as one of the top 20 defense wins in 2002 by The National Law Journal. She also serves as an Adjunct Professor at Northwestern University School of Law, where she teaches "Trial Advocacy."

As Secretary, Carrie keeps the minutes of meetings, the corporate records of the HBA and a register of the address of each member. Carrie also serves as liaison to the Law Day Committee.

Constantine P. Kanellos

Dean is a former Cook County Assistant States Attorney who for many years worked on high profile cases. Mr. Kanellos utilizes the knowledge learned as an Assistant Cook County States Attorney in representing client’s interests involving matters of criminal defense, child custody, DUI charges, divorce, family law, real estate transactions, traffic violations and wrongful death matters.

As Corresponding Secretary, Dean keeps all correspondence and provides all notices to members. Dean also serves as liaison to the Young Lawyers Committee.


Maria Z. Vathis
of Counsel, Bryan Cave LLP
HBA Law School Liaison

Maria Vathis has a broad range of experience defending corporate clients in complex business litigation matters, insurance coverage, and class actions involving alleged violations of federal statutes, including the Telephone Consumer Protection Act. Ms. Vathis has represented financial institutions, investment firms, law firms, brokers, attorneys and other professionals. She handles matters nationwide in federal and state courts.

As Law School Liaison, Maria is responsible for outreach to area law schools and law students and keeps a diary of all past events, happenings and accomplishments of significance to the HBA.  Maria also serves as liaison to the Young Lawyers Committee.
