A. Thomas Skallas

Partner, Thompson Coburn LLP
HBA President

Tom primarily serves as counsel to closely held international and domestic businesses in the manufacturing, distribution, service, consulting, oil and gas, wholesale, construction and retail industries from their inception, as their needs grow and change, through their final disposition. He counsels these entities on a broad range of issues including mergers and acquisitions, sales, complex tax planning, international operations, banking, insurance, contractual, employee and asset protection strategies. Tom graduated from the DePaul University School of Law with a J.D. and an L.L.M. in Taxation, DePaul University with an M.B.A. in Finance and received his undergraduate degree in finance from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

As President, Tom serves as the principal executive officer and supervises the business and affairs of the Association. Tom also presides over all Business Meetings and performs all duties incident to the office of the President and such other duties as may be assigned by the Board of Directors. Tom also serves as liaison to the Nominating and Annual Banquet Committees.

Eleni Kouimelis
Partner, Winston & Strawn LLP
HBA President-Elect

Eleni is chair of Winston & Strawn's Chicago environmental law department. Eleni focuses her practice on environmental issues that arise in a variety of contexts, including transactions, compliance counseling, and litigation. Eleni assists clients with environmental permitting, particularly air permitting, and provides environmental counseling in corporate and real estate transactions, including acquisitions, divestitures, financings, and securities offerings. She provides compliance counseling to diverse industrial and manufacturing clients in all the environmental media, including designing and implementing internal audit programs, strategic planning, and permitting and siting approval. In addition, she advises clients in the remediation and redevelopment of contaminated properties under both voluntary and government-mandated cleanups. 

In the absence of the President, Eleni performs the duties of the President and other duties as assigned by the President or the Board of Directors. Eleni also serves as liaison to the Scholarship Committee.

Thomas G. Massouras                              

Trial Attorney, U.S. Dept. of Housing & Urban Development 

HBA First Vice President


Tom is a trial attorney for the Chicago Regional Office of the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development ("HUD"), litigating and overseeing legislation for the agency in the six-state Midwest Region. Prior to this position, he was a senior staff attorney with the Chicago Housing Authority, an attorney with the Trial Division of the Illinois Attorney General's office, and an Assistant Public Defender for DuPage County.

In the absence of the President and the President-Elect, Tom performs the duties of the President and other duties as assigned by the President or the Board of Directors. Tom also serves as liaison to the External Relations and Judicial Evaluation Committees.


 

Hariklia "Carrie" Karis                       

Partner, Kirkland & Ellis, LLP

HBA Second Vice-President

 

Carrie is a litigation partner in the Chicago office of Kirkland & Ellis. She concentrates her practice in the areas of commercial litigation, insurance and products liability. Hariklia's successful defense of General Motors Corporation was chosen as one of the top 20 defense wins in 2002 by The National Law Journal. She also serves as an Adjunct Professor at Northwestern University School of Law, where she teaches "Trial Advocacy."

In the absence of the President, the President-Elect, and the First Vice-President, Carrie performs the duties of the President and other duties as assigned by the President or the Board of Directors. Carrie also serves as liaison to the Association Events Committee.

Constantine P. Kanellos  
Principal, Kanellos & Associates
HBA Treasurer

Dean is a former Cook County Assistant States Attorney who for many years worked on high profile cases. Mr. Kanellos utilizes the knowledge learned as an Assistant Cook County States Attorney in representing client’s interests involving matters of criminal defense, child custody, DUI charges, divorce, family law, real estate transactions, traffic violations and wrongful death matters.

As Treasurer, Dean is responsible for the collection, maintenance and investment of all dues and other monies of the HBA. Dean also serves as liaison to the Membership and Fundraising Committees.
 

Maria Z. Vathis
of Counsel, Bryan Cave LLP
HBA Secretary

Maria Vathis has a broad range of experience defending corporate clients in complex business litigation matters, insurance coverage, and class actions involving alleged violations of federal statutes, including the Telephone Consumer Protection Act. Ms. Vathis has represented financial institutions, investment firms, law firms, brokers, attorneys and other professionals. She handles matters nationwide in federal and state courts.

As Secretary, Maria keeps the minutes of meetings, the corporate records of the HBA and a register of the address of each member. Maria also serves as liaison to the Law Day Committee.
 


Victoria P. Hallock
Assistant General Counsel, CNA
HBA Corresponding Secretary

Vicki is an assistant general counsel at CNA Insurance responsible corporate litigation and e-discovery. Prior to that, she was a partner at Seyfarth Shaw LLP. She graduated magna cum laude from the University of Illinois School of Law and magna cum laude from the University of Michigan with a degree in political science.

As Corresponding Secretary, Vicki keeps all correspondence and provides all notices to members.  Vicki also serves as liaison to the Young Lawyers Committee.


 

Kyriakoula A. Fournier
Assistant State's Attorney, Cook County
HBA Law School Liaison

Koula is an Assistant State's Attorney for the Cook County State's Attorney's Office currently assigned to the Criminal Appeals Division. She has been a prosecutor for the past thirteen years and has held various positions within the Cook County State's Attorney's Office, including the Sex Crimes Unit, the Felony Trial Division and the Narcotics Unit. Koula graduated from the John Marshall Law School and received her undergraduate degree in political science from DePaul University.

As Law School Liaison, Koula is responsible for outreach to area law schools and law students and keeps a diary of all past events, happenings and accomplishments of significance to the HBA. Koula also serves as liaison to the Young Lawyers Committee.
